More money from cable plastics through electrostatic separation

Separation of finest copper particles from cable plastics with hamos KWS

hamos KWS electrostatic metal separators have proven to be excellent for recovering the finest copper particles from plastic insulation. Advantages of the hamos KWS are in particular the dry separation process, the low operating costs and the very short payback periods of sometimes only a few weeks. hamos supplies hamos KWS electrostatic metal separators as fully automatic, practically maintenance-free plants, designed for three-shift operation seven days a week.

Many hundreds of cable recyclers from all over the world have already decided in favor of such an electrostatic separation plant from hamos. We would be pleased to name reference customers. >> Please contact us!

Functionality of electrostatic metal separation

hamos KWS electrostatic metal separators, also called corona roll separators, exploit the differences in conductivity between metal and plastic (or non-conductive materials) for separation.

In the "12:00 o'clock position," the metal/plastic mixture to be separated is fed in a thin layer onto a horizontally rotating steel roller. In the "1:30 o'clock position", the metal and plastic are electrostatically charged via a high-voltage electrode with voltages of up to 30,000 volts. When the plastic and metal now continue to rotate together with the grounded roller, both substances discharge. Metal particles discharge immediately on the grounded roll and are thrown off the roll surface by the rotation, while plastic particles, being good insulators, discharge very slowly. They adhere to the roll surface and are only spun off or stripped off in the "7:00 o'clock" position.

The purities of metal and plastic insulation can be optimized by means of adjustment flaps. In addition to a highly concentrated metal fraction, the electrostatic separator produces an almost metal-free plastic fraction which can then be further processed without any problems for beacon feet, lawn grating stones or other plastic products. Additional material drying, such as after wet separation with so-called water tables, is not necessary. The mixed product produced between the two fractions is re-separated in a second separation stage integrated in the electrostatic separator with modified setting parameters.

hamos KWS electrostatic separators are supplied as complete turnkey systems. hamos supplies small units for - depending on the material - throughputs of 150 - 300 kg per hour and production units with two parallel rollers in the first separation stage. This enables material-dependent throughputs of 800 - 1,000 kg per hour to be achieved. The mixed product produced in this first stage is re-separated fully automatically in a second separation stage by an additional integrated separation roller to ensure maximum metal yield.

Even more powerful devices sometimes use four separation rollers and can separate the residual metal from up to 1,800 kg of cable plastics per hour. By connecting several separators in parallel, throughputs of several tons per hour can also be realized without any problems.

As a matter of course, hamos KWS electrostatic separators are equipped as standard with fully automatic control with touch panel, integrated dust extraction, fully automatic electrode cleaning and fully automatic internal material logistics, so that three-shift operation seven days a week is possible without any problems. hamos also supplies fully automatic material feed systems and modules for automatic packing of the plastics into big bags etc. to complement the electrostatic separation equipment.
